Introduction - The Maker

Kiara, CEO & Founder of Malama Soaps

Jan 17, 2019

Let me introduce myself. My name is Kiara and I am the woman behind everything you see on Malama Soaps!

I am half-Black and half-Okinawan, originally from Okinawa, Japan. A beautiful unique island with equally unique culture just south of the main island of Japan.

I moved to Hawai'i in late 2007 to pursue a degree in Kinesiology at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. After many long years, tears, late nights, punching out of my full-time job at 2 am, sleeping and eating (practically living) in my car, and induction into 2 honor societies, I finally graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology!

"Why are you making soaps?" you may ask. Well, I've always loved crafts! I began soaping because I was looking for a way to cut down on costs. I saw a few How-To's and decided I was up for the challenge. After a few batches, I was really loving everything about it. I love the chemistry behind soaping. The same recipe with different fragrances can produce different consistencies and alters readiness times. The long trial-and-error stage of soap crafting, the infinite number of recipes you could create, and the infinite number of factors that could determine the end result of your craft is so very interesting to me.

Next thing you know, my house is filled with soaps and I need to share with the world how awesome homemade soap is! All of my friends and family love my soaps, I hope you do too!

Nice to meet you Kiara! I have a son stationed in Okinawa and I hear it is a beautiful place. I am glad I came across your booth at the market. You were very kind and offered me a sample of your soap. I didn’t purchase anything that day at the craft fair but now that I’ve tried your products I will be ordering soon for myself and for gifts!
